The Provisional IRA murdered a 25-year-old milkman as he went about his round near the Tyrone village of Galbally. Five men lay in wait near some isolated cottages and grabbed him as he emerged from his milk lorry. One of the killers held him down as another shot him in the head at point blank range.
The victim came from Derryhubbert near Portadown and was named as Protestant man Christopher Mein. His employers closed the dairy on the day of his funeral and the entire staff attended the service at Annaghmore Parish Church.
The IRA never claimed responsibility and no-one was brought to justice. The attack was thought to be a reprisal for the murder of two Catholics the previous night. As Chris Mein was a relief driver there was also speculation that the intended target had been the regular milkman.
