Just one council by-election was held last night, making it impossible to gauge anything for the big one next Thursday. Held in south Wales, it was a straight fight between Labour and Plaid Cymru, with Labour making an impressive gain. This bucks the trend of the last four months, during which Labour have seen their vote share drop in almost every single by-election. However, with just one contest it's impossible to draw much from it.
