Tuesday's official coronavirus figures for the UK included a sobering death toll of 143, the highest daily total since June and almost triple the previous day's figure of 50. On the same day last week there were 61 Covid deaths reported. New cases also increased back up beyond 17,000 following a four day lull in which new cases dropped as low as 12,872.
