Six by-elections this week - three in Derbyshire and three in the north-east of England. It was a bad night for the Tories who saw their vote share plummet in half of these seats and lost a seat to Labour in Derbyshire. They will have been particularly disappointed not to regain Seales in Derbyshire, which was vacated by an independent who had been initially elected as a Conservative. The Tory vote crashed here, allowing another independent to claim victory by the narrow margin of just nine votes.
Elsewhere, there was a hold each for Labour and the Lib Dems.
