POLICE CONFIRM STARMER PROBE

Durham Constabulary have confirmed they will investigate whether Keir Starmer broke lockdown rules during the so-called 'beergate' event in April 2021.  A spokesperson said the force was in receipt of 'significant new information'.

The full police statement read: "Earlier this year, Durham Constabulary carried out an assessment as to whether Covid-19 regulations had been breached at a gathering in Durham City on April 30th 2021.  At that time, it was concluded that no offence had been established and therefore no further action would be taken.  Following the receipt of significant new information over recent days, Durham Constabulary has reviewed that position and now, following the conclusion of the pre-election period, we can confirm that an investigation into potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations relating to this gathering is now being conducted".

A Labour spokesperson said: "We’re obviously happy to answer any questions there are and we remain clear that no rules were broken".  However, as Keir Starmer was leaving Carlisle this afternoon he refused to answer questions from reporters and was ushered away (click below for video).

If Starmer is found to have breached Covid rules and is fined, his posturing over Partygate will come back to haunt him...

News of the police probe will compound what has been a fairly disappointing set of election results for Starmer.  London asides, Labour failed to make significant gains and looks set to barely match their 2018 local election result - when Jeremy Corbyn was leader.  Embarrassing.
